How to stay motivated and train through winter with Scotty Hawker

Tips on staying motivated through winter

Honestly, winter is one of my favourite times to train. Getting out consistently, whatever the conditions, keeps me mentally grounded through the darker months. It's as much a routine that keeps me sane as it is physical training.

Training in winter stays much the same overall; sessions and training volume is a little lower [compared to the warmer months] but in general I'm hitting a very similar training plan depending on the race I'm building towards. Currently I'm building toward a 100km race this spring/summer, so winter is where the real base and endurance work gets put in.

Most of my winter sessions happen early, before work - getting out the door before sunrise so training doesn't get squeezed out by the day. It sets the tone before anything else competes for my time.

Training with CamelBak

I'm generally using the Apex Pro for most of my longer trail run outings and then for some of my longer mountaineering days I'm using the Octane 22L. It's great having a range of different packs/vests with different volume/capacity for gear so I can match the pack to the mission.

The Thrive Stainless Steel is my go to daily bottle. The flip straw is easy to use and the straw locks in place so I know there's no chance of spillage en route to the gym or work while in my commute backpack.

Scotty Hawker wears the CamelBak Apex Pro Run Vest on longer training runs.

Final Word

There's no such thing as bad weather - just a bad attitude. Gear up properly, get out the door, and the rest takes care of itself.
